| Health Matrix staff includes both second and third year law students. Second year law student members are Associate Editors. Members who participated as Associate Editors may then become part of the executive staff during their third year. The executive staff consists of an Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, Executive Articles Editor, Executive Copy Editor, Publisher, and Executive Notes Editors.
Applying for a position on Health Matrix begins during the final months of first-year students' second semester. At this time, the Journal will hold an informational meeting where current members will make a presentation and answer questions to interested students.
After attending the informational meeting, candidates will participate in a "write-on" competition over the summer. Applicants are evaluated based upon their write-on competition submissions. Candidates must also be in good academic standing at the end of their first year.
The write-on competition -- held jointly with Law Review and the Journal of International Law -- consists of a "closed" problem (meaning that candidates are given an exclusive and fixed number of sources to be used in responding to the issue) for which students must produce a Note-style paper. Sources primarily consist of cases, statutes, and journal articles. The write-on paper has traditionally been limited to ten pages. Candidates are given several weeks to complete the problem. Before the beginning of the students' second year, write-on submissions are evaluated, and the execuitve board offers upcoming second year students positions as Associate Notes Editors.
In addition to their work on the journal, Associate Notes Editors participate in a journal-related Note Seminar. This Seminar, which fulfills the Law School's writing requirement, spans two semesters and is taught by a full-time faculty member. Associate Notes Editors are assigned mentors on the Journal's executive staff, whose role is to assist the 2Ls in preparation of their notes by editing early drafts, providing research and topic suggestions, and serving as a voice of experience. Associate Notes Editors receive a total of three credits for their journal- and seminar-related work.
Upon completion of their duties, members of the executive staff are awarded an additional two hours of academic credit.
