How to Join Law Review
The Law Review’s staff consists of second and third year law students. Rising second year law students receive invitations to join Law Review from the Law Review's Executive Board based on their academic performance during their first year of law school. A few students will receive invitations based on their performance in the write-on competition. The write-on competition is held jointly with Health Matrix and the Journal of International Law and takes place during the summer after the first year of law school. The competition consists of a "closed" problem (meaning that candidates are given a fixed number of sources to be used in responding to the problem) for which students must produce a note-style paper. Sources primarily consist of cases, statutes, and journal articles. The write-on competition has traditionally been limited to ten pages, and candidates have several weeks to complete the problem.
Law Review Positions
Editorial Board:
Third-year law students comprise the Law Review's Editorial Board. The Editorial Board is responsible for editing, verifying, and finalizing each issue for publication. The Law Review’s Executive Board consists of eight members of the Editorial Board who are responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Law Review.
Associate Editors:
All second year students on Law Review are Associate Editors. Associate Editors have two main responsibilities. First, they participate in a seminar class taught by the Law Review's faculty advisor in which they write a scholarly paper—called a Note—on a topic of their choice. The Note satisfies the law school's writing requirement, and the Executive Board considers the Note for publication in the Law Review’s next volume. Second, Associate Editors participate in the Law Review 's publication process. Associate Editors are responsible for verifying the accuracy and format of the legal citations contained in all Articles and Notes selected for publication.
