Co-Director, Peter A. Carfagna

Peter A. CarfagnaPeter A. Carfagna is Chairman/CEO of Magis, LLC, a privately owned sports marketing, management and investment company, including family ownership of the Lake County Captains, Cleveland Indians Class A Affiliate. He has also been the Managing Member of LLC’s affiliated with many Major League Baseball teams, including the Boston Red Sox; Seattle Mariners; Houston Astros; and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

From 1994-2005, Peter served as Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel of International Management Group (IMG), and was Senior Partner at Jones Day LLP before that,
during which time he worked as outside counsel to the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers’ ownership groups.

Peter graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College, having also played Varsity Football. Peter was then a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, graduating M.A. with Honours in Jurisprudence/Law. He then graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude, where he studied under Professor Paul J. Weiler, the “father of Sports and the Law” at Harvard.

Since being appointed by then-Dean Elena Kagan as the Covington Burling Distinguished Visitor in 2006, Peter has alternated teaching 3 Sports Law Courses at Harvard Law School, each of which has been published as a casebook: 1) Representing the Professional Athlete (2nd Ed. West 2014), which is the subject of a Coursera MOOC that was first offered in Fall 2014; 2) Examining The Legal Evolution of America’s 3 ‘Major Leagues’ (2nd Ed. West 2011); and 3) Negotiating and Drafting Sports Venue Agreements (West 2010).

At Harvard Law School, he is Faculty Advisor to the Harvard Law School's Committee on Sports and Entertainment Law and its Journal on Sports and Entertainment Law. He is also Faculty Supervisor of Harvard Law School's Sports Law Clinical Program, responsible for 20+ sports law clinicals each school year with the NFL, MLB, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Brooklyn Nets, CAA, Excel Sports Agency, Special Olympics and the Carolina Panthers, among others.

Peter has served as Distinguished Visiting Practitioner at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and as Executive in Residence at Cleveland Marshall College of Law from 2011 to the present. Peter currently serves on the Midwest Region/Chicago-based Selection Committee for the Rhodes Scholarship, as well as on the Board of the Sports Legacy Institute and the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Peter is also a former Elected Director of the Harvard Alumni Association and the Association of American Rhodes Scholars. He has served the HAA as a Member of the Nominating Committee for the Harvard University Board of Overseers.

Mark Avsec
Mark AvsecMark has served as an Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law teaching “Law of The Music Industry” since 2003. He is partner and Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff, LLP. Before becoming a lawyer, Mr. Avsec earned a living as a studio musician, producer and songwriter, writing over 500 songs and producing or performing on more than 30 sound recordings for, among other artists, Bon Jovi (“She Don’t Know Me”), Donnie Iris (“Ah! Leah!” and “Love Is Like A Rock”), Mason Ruffner (“Gypsy Blood”) and Wild Cherry (“Play That Funky Music, White Boy”). Mr. Avsec is an American Music Award winner and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. He was a member of Wild Cherry and the founding member of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers. Mr. Avsec remains active in the entertainment industry as a writer and a performer. “Angel Love (Come for Me),” a song he co-wrote, was recorded by Carlos Santana and released in February 2010 on the album Supernatural – Legacy Edition. Mr. Avsec regularly performs as keyboard player with Donnie Iris & The Cruisers and occasionally with The James Gang, featuring Joe Walsh, Jimmy Fox, and Dale Peters. Mr. Avsec has also served on the faculty for the Federal Judicial Center and the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology where he has presented on copyright law basics and infringement analysis to federal judges with Professors David Nimmer and Peter Menell at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt School of Law.
Ricky Volante
Ricky VolanteRicky is an attorney, manager and consultant focusing on the sports, entertainment, and media industries. Ricky serves as Attorney At Law at Buckley King LPA, Principal at Sixth City Sports & Entertainment, LLC, and Executive Director for the GLSELA. From coast to coast, Ricky works with professional and amateur sports organizations, teams, owners, sports-related entities, as well as athletes, coaches, and executives. He works directly with producers, production companies, musicians, studios, and internet and technology companies. He advises on matters from business formations and regulation to contracts, including negotiating and drafting license, performance, recording, merchandise, management, player, sponsorship, and media agreements. Ricky has been involved with event management and operation, facility management, branding and marketing, sponsorships and activation, as well as market analysis and strategic planning. He received his B.S. in Sports Management at Lake Erie College and J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University.
David Shall
David ShallDavid is COO and General Counsel of The Torante Company, founded by David Eisner. Torante invests in, acquires, and operates companies in media and entertainment. Prior to joining Torante, he served as Head of Business Operations & General Counsel at Vuguru LLC, a pioneer in multi-platform content. Mr. Shall previously was Executive Vice President, Business Operations/General Counsel, FremantleMedia North America, Inc., where he oversaw business affairs for the hit television programs American Idol, America’s Got Talent and The Price is Right, and assisted in the formation and operation of Atomic Wedgie, FremantleMedia’s Digital Comedy Studio. Mr. Shall also served as Executive Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs and New Business Development, Twentieth Television, the syndication and first-run production division of Twentieth Century Fox. Earlier in his career, he worked as a business & legal affairs executive at FX Networks in New York City, Tribune Entertainment Company in Chicago, and Paramount Domestic Television in Hollywood. Mr. Shall received his B.A. in English and History, and J.D., from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Angelin Chang
Angelin ChangInternationally acclaimed pianist Angelin Chang is the first American female and the first pianist of Asian heritage to be awarded the GRAMMY® for Best Instrumental Soloist with orchestra. She is recognized for her sense of poetry and technical brilliance. Concertizing in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, Miss Chang’s concert tours have led her to such venues as the Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), Kimmel Center (Philadelphia), Lincoln Center (New York), Severance Hall (Cleveland), St. Martin-in-the-Fields (London), Zelazowa Wola (Warsaw), Shanghai Grand Theatre (China), Sala Luis Ángel Arango (Bogotá), Schnittke Philharmonic Hall (Russia) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation. She is the first American awarded First Prizes in both piano and chamber music during the same year from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, France. As the first Artist-in-Residence at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Angelin Chang participated in the development and launching of the Arts for Everyone initiative. She has performed at the U.S. Department of State, for the United Nations Women's Organization and for World AIDS Day in New York for the United Nations before the Secretary-General. An active chamber musician, she performs regularly with the legendary violist Joseph de Pasquale, The de Pasquale String Quartet, and with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra.
Ryan Bocskay
Ryan BocskayRyan is Vice President, Business Affairs NBC Entertainment and Universal Television in Los Angeles. He negotiates deals for Universal Television (NBC’s studio) and NBC Entertainment (the NBC Network). Mr. Bocskay handles current NBC series “Community”, “Welcome to the Family” and “Hannibal,” and he was the day-to-day business affairs executive on the hit series “The Office”. He also works on NBC Specials such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and The Rose Parade. Mr. Bocskay previously worked at the William Morris Agency and New Line Cinema. He brings six years of entertainment experience and holds a BA in English from the University of Michigan and J.D. from Case Western Reserve University – School of Law. He once had to tell an executive producer that the show could not force an actress to shave her head.
Jim Juliano
Jim JulianoJim is a member of Manager Committee at Nicola, Gudbranson & Cooper, LLC. Mr. Juliano practices sports and entertainment law and has spoken around the country on sports law issues. He writes about sports business and law on his website, www.legallyspeakingonline.com, and in his newsletter, Legally Speaking®. Mr. Juliano specializes in general counsel services to small and closely held businesses as well as to public sector entities such as municipalities and school districts. His practice includes business transactions, civil litigation, buy/sell agreements and real estate, labor, employment and related matters. Throughout his career, he has negotiated the purchases and sales of minor league baseball teams and other privately held businesses, counseled a professional baseball team in connection with ballpark construction and represented teams in obtaining approvals from Minor League Baseball and the commissioner of Major League Baseball.
